Chase Manhattan donates $5M for scholarships

Brandeis University A $5 million grant from the Chase Manhattan Foundation will help Brandeis University provide scholarships for underprivileged students and first-generation Americans.

The donation will also be used to help set up the Chase Manhattan Chair in Ethics. Brandeis University has a long history of social engagement, as exemplified by the school's International Center on Ethics, Justice and Public Life.

This is one of the largest gifts by the Chase Manhattan Foundation to an educational organization. The foundation provides philanthropic support to nonprofits around the world, focusing on arts and culture, community development and human services, and education.

Brandeis -- the newest private research college in the U.S. -- is the only nonsectarian university in the country founded by the American Jewish community. It is located in Waltham, Mass.
