Ford grant to keep university, students in tune with environment

The Ford Motor Co. is giving Michigan Technological University $3 million over the next five years to pay for programs from scholarships to facilities support. The grant will emphasize environmental programs and research.

Student education programs such as the Ford Careers for the American Road Scholarship Program for undergraduates and the Ford Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing Fellowships for M.S. and Ph.D. students also will benefit from the grant.

Money also will go to the Research and Emerging Technology Stewardship program, which prepares graduates to handle the newest automotive technology issues. The Ford/Michigan Tech Partnership for the Environment will also benefit as well.

University President Curt Tompkins says that the expanded relationship between the two organizations is "beneficial and strategically important," since Ford seeks graduating students and technology research, which Michigan Tech can provide.
