Intel's philanthropy budget tops $101 million for fiscal 1998

Intel Corp.'s annual budget for education, scholarships and corporate philanthropy topped $101 million in fiscal 1998, up from $97 million in 1997, Bloomberg News reports.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based computer chip maker plans to devote virtually all of its philanthropic activities to education in the foreseeable future. Intel likely will spend as much as two-thirds of its corporate giving outside the U.S., on projects ranging from giving computers to schools to professional training, said Tracy Koon, director of corporate marketing.

By stressing education, the company is also looking out for its own future by creating a pool of professionals that can make the next generation of chips, Koon told the Bloomberg news service.

Other programs include taking over what's now called the Intel Science Talent Search from CBS Corp.'s Westinghouse Electric unit. The national program encourages students to apply for one of 10 scholarships awarded every year to high school seniors.
