Groups receive millions in 'working assets'
For the past fifteen years, people have been able to make long distance calls, use credit cards, access the Internet and view broadcasts, knowing that they are doing good, all through Working Assets, which gives away a portion of its profits to progressive organizations nominated by its customers.
The company announced it has passed the $20-million mark in total donations to progressive organizations over the years.
"When we created Working Assets 15 years ago, critics told us that a company had to be dedicated to making money above everything else. Otherwise, it wouldn't last," said Laura Scher, CEO of the company. "We proved those critics wrong."
Working Assets doesn't plan on cutting back its support of social causes, either. The company plans to give out $5 million this year to 60 groups, including Amnesty International, Sweatshop Watch, the ACLU, Greenpeace, the Global Fund for Women and the East Timor Action Network.
