More than 3 millions students in some of the world's most underdeveloped nations will soon be rocketing down the information highway thanks to more than $7 million in donations from almost 200 individuals and organizations.
The effort is being coordinated by Schools Online, a public benefit organization whose mission is to provide Internet equipment to schools not equipped with modern technology. Schools Online will provide training to teachers through a series of initiatives aimed at helping them with the basics of its online technology as part of the HELLO 2000 program.
"Because of the generous donations from private individuals and corporations, Schools Online will continue to help expand the reach of the technology revolution and bring the Internet to schools that have so far been left out," Schools Online President Touraj Rahimi said.
Teachers will be able to visit a website featuring outlines of successful workshops, and Schools Online will provide links to other resources. Schools Online also plans to begin publishing a quarterly newsletter so its network of 5,400 teachers can share ideas.
Grants for professional development in information technologies will soon be issued to 100 K-12 teachers in Phoenix, Ariz., Miami, Fla., and Cleveland, Ohio.
