The Canadian War Museum will get a $1 million contribution from an unnamed "major foundation" if the museum's plan for a new building gets government approval, the Ottawa Citizen reports.
The museum, home to a $400-million art collection and an archive of military equipment, uniforms and documents, has asked the Canadian government to approve plans for a $70 million facility in Ottawa on land owned by the Department of National Defense and the National Capital Commission.
Retired Gen. Paul Manson, chairman of the Friends of the Canadian War Museum's new facility project, has refused to name the potential donor. He described it as "a well-established Canadian charitable foundation based in Ontario or Quebec," the paper reports.
Manson's group has raised $2.5 million for the move so far. Other foundations have said they would contribute to the effort if the plan is approved. Those commitments would raise donations to about $10 million, he says.
The museum's previous director unveiled a $12 million expansion plan last year for the existing museum, which is spread over two buildings. The museum's new director, Jack Granatstein, has said the expansion is inadequate and has put those plans on hold until officials respond to plans for the new site.
