David Duffield - the founder, president and chief executive officer of PeopleSoft Inc. - has established a $200 million fund to help animal shelters around the country find homes for stray dogs and cats, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The money will be distributed by the new Duffield Family Foundation, created by the Danville, Calif. resident and his wife, Cheryl, the Tribune reports.
The foundation is led by Richard Avanzino, former president of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Tribune reports.
The foundation has announced that shelters and other groups which eliminate animal euthanasia through alternative programs within four years are eligible for a $1 million bonus, the Tribune reports.
The Duffields' commitment is attributed to their love for a dog named Maddie. The billionaire software giant has said Maddie showed him "unconditional love" during the times when he and his company were struggling, the Tribune reports.
PeopleSoft now has revenues estimated at $8 billion a year. Duffield has a personal fortune of $1.9 billion, the Tribune reports.
Duffield ranked 26th on Fortune magazine's list of the 40 Most Generous Americans last year.
