The Austin, Texas-based St. David's Foundation has announced it will distribute $1.6 million to 13 local health care groups this year. More than half of the grant funds going to a clinic for uninsured and underinsured Austin workers, the Austin Business Journal reports.
The People's Community Clinic will receive $900,000 to maintain evening hours, expand prenatal care for teen mothers and other services. The funds represent more than one third of the clinic's annual budget, the Business Journal reports.
The grant represents the foundation's new emphasis on health programs that benefit Austin's rising number of minimum-wage, temporary and self-employed workers. A large number of these people are either uninsured or underinsured for medical benefits.
Other recipients include:
- $250,000 over three years to the Blood & Tissue Center of Central Texas
- $150,000 to the Tandem program for pregnant teens and teen parents
- $55,000 to Family Eldercare for a case management program
- $52,960 to the University of Texas' Children's Wellness Center in Del Valle, Texas to fund a health nurse coordinator.
The St. David's Foundation was formed during the merger of the nonprofit St. David's Hospital group with the for-profit Columbia Healthcare System.
The foundation has awarded more than $6.2 million in community health grants since 1996.
