Duke University hits $1B fundraising mark

Campaign for Duke When you get to $1 billion, where do you go from there?

For the Campaign for Duke officials, the answer was "Higher" as they announced that Duke University's fundraising drive had passed the $1 billion mark, a record amount for a North Carolina school, the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., reports.

The campaign's goal is to raise $1.5 billion by 2003. It is on a good track, as it has received large gifts -- such as a $35 million donation from Edmund Pratt, a Duke alumnus -- and already has 80 percent of pledged money in hand.

Despite the flow of money, however, campaign officials aren't planning to raise the goal higher just yet. Some targeted areas are running behind, such as the endowment and graduate fellowships, the News & Observer reports.

Raising that much money has put Duke in the company of an elite few. Only Harvard University and Columbia University have raised more than $2 billion.
