Broadcasters, CropWalkers raise an estimated $2.6M for flood victims

Flood victims in Eastern North Carolina will receive additional help, thanks to two more fundraising drives held Sunday, Oct. 3.

Hundreds of radio and television stations across North Carolina helped raise nearly $2 million for victims during a live, six-hour North Carolina Association of Broadcasters telethon. Pledges were still being accepted at 1-888-835-9966.

In addition, the recovering families will receive 75 percent of the proceeds from the annual CropWalk through Raleigh. The CropWalk usually raises money to fight hunger, WRAL-TV reports.

This year's CropWalk in Raleigh will raise an estimated $60,000. The local walk is just one of 2,000 locally-organized Crop Walks in which more than 2 million walkers and sponsors participate.

The Sunday events are just two in a string of efforts to help those affected by flooding in North Carolina. Relief organizations, companies, volunteers and the military have been working together to deliver food, water, medicine, cleaning supplies, ice and money to the victims.

Most recently, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Food Lion each gave $1 million to the N.C. Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund.

Among the many other supporters, the Salvation Army has provided shelter and meals for nearly 100,000 flood victims and the American Red Cross has collected donations and money.

The flooding is the result of rains caused by recent hurricanes Dennis and Floyd, and at least four days of additional rain in those communities.
