Johnson C. Smith University has raised $63.8 million, or 127 percent of its original $50 million, six-year goal, the Associated Press reports.
This is the second-highest amount ever raised by a United Negro College Fund member school, AP reports.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Johnson C. Smith also is only the second historically black school in recent years to exceed a multi-million-dollar fundraising goal, the news service reports.
Spelman College in Atlanta holds both fundraising records. The college raised a total $114 million in a campaign that ended in 1996, according to AP.
Spelman's effort was boosted by a $20 million gift from Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille.
The largest drive previously conducted by Johnson C. Smith raised $6 million in 1988, the school reports.
The university's recent campaign was led by First Union National Bank chairman and chief executive officer Ed Crutchfield. Executive committee members included Bank of America chairman and chief executive officer Hugh McColl, retired Charlotte Observer publisher Rolfe Neill and Republic Bank and Trust chairman emeritus John Stedman.
