N.C. flood relief efforts underway; donations needed

As the waters recede from flooded roads and communities in eastern North Carolina, volunteers and supply shipments are coming down those highways to those people who have lost their homes, livelihoods -- and sometimes even loved ones.

Relief organizations, companies, volunteers and the military are working together to deliver staples such as food, potable water, medicine, cleaning supplies and ice to victims of the flooding caused by hurricanes Dennis and Floyd, the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. reports.

In the Raleigh area, local companies such as WNCN (NBC-17), Robuck Homes, Pepsi Bottling, Clear Channel Communications and BTI have sent truckloads of water, nonperishable food and other supplies to eastern communities.

Charitable organizations are playing a major role in relief efforts, the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record reports.

The Salvation Army has provided almost 100,000 flood victims with shelter and food. Moving 35 mobile kitchens into areas still without power, units are providing hot food to those who haven't had any for days.

Cresting flood waters have made the effort tricky, stranding one relief unit near Goldsboro, N.C.. The organization also is spending its own funds to provide food as they wait for donations.

The American Red Cross has been collecting donations to help those in need. The Red Cross had collected $350,000 as of Monday, but wants to raise $25 million over time. The Red Cross -- in partnership with the Southern Baptist Convention -- is also providing mobile kitchens in the flood zones.

Other organizations are helping meet the burgeoning needs of the flood victims. Second Harvest is collecting food for emergency officials and relief personnel to distribute, and Samaritan's Purse is using volunteers to help clean up and repair houses, the News & Record reports.

The University of North Carolina system is trying to help students flooded out of dorms and apartments at East Carolina University by asking people at the other campuses to give to the "Quarter Campaign." The campaign asks each student to give at least a quarter to the fund, which will help replace books and school supplies, the News & Observer reports.

State officials are asking that volunteers wanting to help go to established groups such as the Salvation Army or Red Cross. They recommend monetary donations as a priority, but cleaning supplies, bottled water, nonperishable foods, baby supplies and pet supplies can be given.

Those who want to assist can contact the following organizations:

  • The N.C. Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund, administered by the United Way of North Carolina. Checks should be made payable to N.C. Hurricane Floyd Disaster Relief Fund and mailed to Office of the Governor, 20301 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-0301. Donations are tax-deductible.
