Supporters pledge more than $2B to Kosovo

At a Kosovo aid conference, a number of nations and relief organizations pledged US$2.08 billion to rebuild the shattered province, the Associated Press reports.

This amount is nearly four times the estimated costs of immediate repairs and emergency aid, World Bank officials told AP.

These officials also said that while estimates for the cost of restoring Kosovo are constantly changing, they are encouraged by the results because the surplus ensures enough money for present and future programs, AP reports.

Major donors are:

  • $692 million by the European Agency for Reconstruction (European Union)
  • $500 million by the United States
  • $200 million from Japan
  • $190 million from Germany.

The United Nations and the European Union had asked for approximately $545 million to provide for refugees, re-establish civil services and rebuild homes. The Associated Press reports that over half of the area's 200,000 homes were destroyed, but industry and infrastructure were spared primarily because Serb forces planned to occupy the territory.

In specific moves by the United States, $41 million will go to police training in the province and $20 million to prosecute war criminals.

Future programs will be announced at another conference, scheduled for October.
