Silicon Valley foundation tries to boost area giving

Another report out of Silicon Valley looks at whether geeks are stingy. CMPNet's online news service EE Times has a story that looks at efforts by Community Foundation Silicon Valley to encourage more charitable giving in the region.

The foundation recently conducted a survey that found that almost have of its wealthiest contributors give just $2,000 or less annually to charity.

"The Valley is a region that has clearly not reached its potential in charitable giving and volunteerism," the report said.

Peter Hero is president of the foundation. He told EE Times "We do have a strong pattern of giving, but we also have pockets of real stinginess."

Paul Lippe, senior vice president of Mountain View, Calif.-based Synopsys Inc., says in a few years the region's millionaires and billionaires will give more as they develop closer ties to the area and find more time away from work.
