Five companies win leadership in education awards

EdPress The Association of Educational Publishers (EdPress) has named five winners of the 1999 Star Awards for Business Leadership in Education, given to recognize corporations for their achievements in promoting education in America.

"We're honoring these companies for their commitment and for creating innovative programs that make life better for students of all ages," Charlene F. Gaynor, EdPress' executive director, told guests at the New York event.

The five winners of the 1999 Star Awards are:

  • The Baltimore Sun, for its Reading By 9 literacy program, which recruits literacy volunteers, encourages reading programs and includes a series of articles on the reading skills of Maryland children;
  • The Coca-Cola Company, for Coca-Cola Valued Youth, a program for San Antonio (Tex.) public schools which allows older students in danger of dropping out to tutor younger students also having trouble. The program has been replicated in the United States, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Great Britain;
  • Merrill Lynch, for ScholarshipBuilder, a program created with the National Urban League to "adopt" 250 inner-city first graders nationwide and help them through the years to complete their high school education;
  • State Farm Insurance Companies, for Partners in a Learning Community, a five-year initiative with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to boost certification among teachers;
  • Target Stores, for Take Charge of Education, a funding program that provides scholarships, donations, school uniforms and environmental education programs to communities where the stores are located.

    Coca-Cola and Merrill Lynch each won a Golden Star Award for being the most successful programs honored this year.

    "Judges reviewed entries based on the company's philosophy and commitment to education; research, scope and objectives; and outcomes," Gaynor said. "We hope that these awards will bring additional attention to these programs and spark others to emulate their success."

    Applications for the 2000 Star Awards are available online or by calling (856)256-4610. The applications deadline is December 3, 1999.
