The AFL-CIO is working with Internet company iBelong to provide at least 1 million of its union members with low-cost computers and Internet access, the New York Times reports.
As part of the test program, computers are being offered to members for less than $700 and Internet access will be $14.95 per month, the Times reports.
Morton Bahr, president of the Communications Workers of America, told the Times that by being "wired" to key people, the union will be able to ask millions of members at once to stop buying a certain product or start protesting public officials for a specific cause.
The service is slated to begin in December and will allow participating members to enter portals specific to their union. The AFL-CIO represents 13 million people through 68 unions, representing 80 percent of unionized American workers, the Times reports.
The organization solicited bids for discounted computers from Dell, Gateway and others.
