Boston wires all public schools, libraries, community centers

All of Boston's public schools, libraries and community centers are now connected to the Internet, the first big city school district to be fully online, the Washington Post reports.

Each of Boston's public schools now have at least one computer center and other computers in at least four classrooms, the Post reports. The public school system used $50 million from its capital budget and more than $26 million in donations for the project.

The 128-school district had one computer for every 63 students two years ago. That ratio is now down to on computer for every 10 students, the paper reports.

In addition, about 60 percent of Boston 4,800 public school teachers have received some type of computer training. The computer effort also provides Internet filtering software to block offensive material, the paper reports.

The effort augments a larger $125 million public/private initiative to have at least one computer for every four public school students by 2001, the Post reports.
