An environmental group has launched a "cyber activism" campaign in observance of today's international Earth Day celebrations.
The Heritage Forests Campaign is asking Web users to visit their site and take part in a number of online activities, including sending an electronic postcard to Vice President Al Gore.
Other activities include a "Word of Mouse" effort to introduce the Heritage Forest Campaign to family, friends and coworkers, asking Earth Day participants to collect petition names and addresses electronically - rather than on paper - and such volunteer activities as contacting local officials, contributing photos and linking to the Heritage Forests site.
The site's goal is to build support for the estimated one-third of U.S. national forests not protected from logging, road building or mining.
The Heritage Forests group is an alliance of conservationists, educators, scientists, clergy and other supporters. The OurForests.org site was designed by emediacy, an online innovation and demonstration project of the Technology Project.
