Democrats offer free Internet service, Republicans launch portal

The Democratic National Committee is offering free Internet service, part of its FreeDEM.com Web portal.

The DNC says the free ISP (managed by MillionEyes.com), is "a bridge over the digital divide" that will provide quality Web access to all Americans regardless of their annual incomes or party preference, InternetNews.com reports.

FreeDEM.com was developed by iBelong.com and is a portal for all types of political information, along with breaking news, sports, investment information and weather reports. The site also lets computer users voicing their opinions by participating in online discussions and message boards, InternetNews reports.

The free ISP service has more than 2,500 local connections across the country and offers 24-hour customer service.

House Republicans aren't conceding the online world to the other party however. They've just launched the GOP.gov site, "designed to give the public immediate access to news releases, schedules, and other information from their member of Congress."

While Republican leaders aren't yet providing free Web surfing, the party realizes the Internet "offers unparalleled opportunities for Congress to keep the public informed about our work - especially providing constituents with news they can use," stated Rep. J.C. Watts, Jr., chairman of the House Republican Conference.
