Avon crusades for breast cancer awareness

Avon Products Inc. estimates that it raised nearly $20 million during its Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day series, a 3-day walk held in four cities across the country. The event is part of the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade, launched in 1993 to raise money for awareness of breast cancer.

The 3-Day series is a fundraising event in which 2,000 women and men walk approximately 60 miles over three days. Each walker agrees to raise at least $1,800 during the event.

The walkers train with a coach before the event. Each evening during the 3-day walk, participants are treated to entertainment, hot meals, and showers. They sleep in a tent city.

This year's event was held in Chicago in June, New York in August and Atlanta and Los Angeles in October. The 2000 event will return to those cities and Washington, D.C., Boston and San Francisco.

The event began last year in Southern California, with more than 2,300 participants and 500 volunteers. That event raised $5 million to support breast cancer education and early detection.

In addition to the 3-Day series, the Avon Breast Cancer Awareness Crusade raises money through the sale of Pink Ribbon Avon products. Together, the two projects have garnered about $50 million for breast cancer.
