Qualcomm founder gives $2m to endow USC chair

Andrew J. Viterbi, one of the founders of the wireless firm Qualcomm Inc., and his wife, Erna, donated $2 million to create a professional chair at USC's School of Engineering, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Viterbi is a USC alumnus. The donation will fund the university's Andrew and Erna Viterbi Chair in Communications.

Professor Solomon W. Golomb, an expert in digital and space communications, is the first recipient.

Viterbi was a member of Solomon's research group in the 1950s when the two were at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The two were praised for their work in communications theory.
