Million-dollar donor identified

From the Dallas Morning News

The mystery man who donated a surprise $1 million to a Tyler, Texas elementary school this spring has been identified as Dallas investment banker John R. Muse, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Muse, co-founder and chief operating officer of the Hicks, Muse, Tate and Furst investment firm, pledged the money in April after being asked to make a contribution to the Birdwell Elementary School's 50th anniversary fund drive.

Muse attended Birdwell in the 1950s. He requested that his name be kept secret until school officials come up with a plan to match the donation, representatives of the Birdwell Parent-Teacher Association said.

The Birdwell campaign has raised $1.7 million toward its $2.5 million goal. PTA officials have recently announced plans for a $40 million fund drive for the entire Tyler school district that will take advantage of the publicity surrounding Muse's donation.
