Seniors get tech training

Although growing numbers of seniors are receiving personal computers as gifts from family members, many have no one to show them the high-tech ropes. Computer manuals are typically aimed at users with a basic understanding of computers, which many older people lack.

SeniorNet, a San Francisco-based nonprofit program, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Association of Older Americans, is offering beginning computer courses to people 55 and older, reports the May 23 Boston Globe. Taught by other elders, the classes are intended to provide an overview of basic PC applications.

"Small classes provide seniors with an opportunity to get hands-on experience," says Phyllis C.Galante, the association's executive director. "It is a basic course not intended to make the student a completely self-sufficient computer expert."

Tuition for the low-cost course also includes memberships in both SeniorNet and the association, as well as class materials.
